With Adda, I speak to two cultural workers who already share a connection – through friendship, romance, collaboration, or anything in between. We organise a little আড্ডা (adda) session for ourselves where we can slowly and meanderingly get to know each other. We flow in and out of topics, discussing the guests’ relationship with each other, the interdependent networks they are each a part of, and the ways that care and relationship-building are centred in their work. Consciously or subconsciously, each person I have spoken to also carries histories or lived experiences of migration, which come up naturally as a running thread in our conversations.

Featuring Puer Deorum & Jannat Husssain

In this first issue, I speak with two British-Bangladeshi artists, Puer Deorum and Jannat Hussain. I met Puer in 2022 when we used to work together, and Jannat in 2024, through Puer. The two of them had been friends for a while, and at the time, they had also been working towards a duo exhibition titled heavy traces, light trails that ran at Filet Space in London, in November 2024.
︎Puer Deorum is an interdisciplinary artist whose work balances negotiations between weight and ephemerality, touching upon the omnipresent scope of mortality. Drawing out from their cultural context, and referencing psycho/socio political geographies, they question homogenous ideas around the experience of time, see-sawing between monochronic (linear) and polychronic (fluid) methods. Weaving incantations of love and encapsulating embodied feelings, they tease temporalities through endurance and duration, amplifying (inter)personal experiences through dream sequences and interpretive actions. Selected sharings of their art include: Whitechapel Gallery (London), Serendipity Arts Festival (Goa), Les Urbaines (Lausanne), Hugo Boss (London), and Instrument Inventors (The Hague). Solo exhibitions: Filet Gallery (London), Quench Gallery (Margate). Selected awards: Set Studio Prize, and Arts Council DYCP Grant. They curated and produced ELO MELO, a multi-media festival in London across Whitechapel Gallery and Toynbee Hall, with Oitij-jo Collective. Notable talks and panel discussions include Tate Modern, and Glastonbury Festival.Jannat Hussain is an interdisciplinary artist, curator, and creative facilitator with an MA and BA in Fine Art from Central Saint Martins. Her practice navigates the space between introspective realities and outward expression, where close observation of the self and interpersonal dynamics translates into highly emotive responses. Her work is experiential, grounded in the erudition of feeling, and involves extrapolating sentimental moments from her life that are worthy of rendering, mapping her emotional landscape. Jannat’s current focus lies in using the material and cultural attributes of sculpture and performance art to explore various forms of intimacy. She is currently the Creative Programme Coordinator at Arts Network, an arts and mental health charity. In addition, she holds a position on the Artist Council for a-n The Artist Information Company. Her work has been exhibited at Tate Britain, the V&A, The Albany Theatre, Cooke Latham Gallery, among others in both gallery and public settings.

Featuring Gisselle Girón & Ingrid Pumayalla

This second gathering features curator Gisselle Girón Casas and artist Ingrid Pumayalla, two Peruvian practitioners currently based in the UK. Gisselle and Ingrid have been friends and collaborators for many years, and I met both of them through a close friend here in London.
︎
Gisselle Girón Casas (Lima) is a curator and art historian working between the UK and Peru. She has contributed to collective projects such as the digital platform Gifggenheim and the artist-led space Oficina M20 - Hotel Savoy. Her recent curatorial projects include Taking a Bow. Haciendo una reverencia (2025) by Bryan Giuseppi Rodriguez Cambana at Art Exchange, Colchester; Hiato en el tiempo (2024) by Gianine Tabja at ICPNA San Miguel, Lima; Drama Shopping Center (2024) by Marisabel Arias at ICPNA Miraflores, Lima; and the digital exhibition Prisioneras del Amor y el costo de otras economías invisibles (2021) at Centro Cultural Universidad del Pacífico, Lima. She is currently Assistant Curator for the Essex Collection of Art from Latin America (ESCALA) and the University Art Collections at the University of Essex, Colchester. For a deeper look into her work – as well as glimpses into her daily life, music, and recommendations for living – visit gissellegiron.com

Ingrid Pumayalla (b. 1989, Trujillo, Peru) is a Peruvian visual artist and performer based in London. Her work explores memory, ancestral knowledge, and the role of women in cultural transmission through film, performance, and site-specific rituals. Rooted in Andean cosmology, her practice interweaves oral history, textile traditions, and healing gestures to address themes of displacement, colonial trauma, and ecological loss. She holds an MA in Fine Arts from Central Saint Martins and has exhibited internationally, with recent presentations at the Museum of San Marcos (Lima), the Bienal de La Habana, and IESA (Paris). Her current research focuses on the politics of food, territory, and storytelling as acts of resistance.

Supported by Goldsmiths CCA︎
Mapping Local Ecologies, a part of the Residents programme at the Goldsmiths Centre for Contemporary Art, presented a schedule of regular events and activities aimed at re-discovering and re-engaging with historical and newfound narratives within the locale of New Cross and South East London at large. In the form of a research group, the year-long project aimed to explore local oral histories and accounts seeking to address themes of gentrification, local identity, and community building. The events was led by various guest contributors such as community members, local artists and networks within the broader Goldsmiths student ecology.Aiming to engender the production of uncommon knowledge of shared urban space, the group imagined New Cross as a site of transformation through collectively producing a cartographical document to re-trace existing histories and potential futures within the neighbourhood.

Set The TableSt. John’s Garden, LondonJuly 2021Co-curatorCo-curated with Yurika Imaseki and Renee Xinying ZhongWork by Maria Joranko, Navi Kaur, and Katie Surridge︎
Set The Table explores the connections that three artists - Maria Joranko, Navi Kaur, and Katie Surridge - have with food. Through installations and participatory performances, the project traces how processes of cultivation, preparation, and consumption work to form delicate networks between people and places. Mapping the intersections of food, migration, community, and identity, Set The Table evokes the experience of eating together, providing opportunities to spark complex conversations, whether in consensus or dissensus. Harnessing the power of food to generate visceral, sensorial memories, a wide entry point is created for anyone to join in and engage with themes of intimacy, collectivity, and forming new relationships with people or with the land. Set The Table provides a safe and welcoming space for new bonds to form, even if for a brief moment, between friends, acquaintances, or strangers.a Deptford X 2021 Fringe event.

Going Public was a workshop for young people held at the Old Kent Road Art Club, exploring the public spaces that we live in, and our role within it. Together, the group considered how they would like to participate and intervene in the neighbourhood we inhabit by imagining our own public sculptures and installations for it. Led by Goldsmiths MFA graduate Evelina Hägglund, the workshop began with field research. On a walking excursion around Old Kent Road, participants showed each other familiar and unfamiliar spaces, discovering corners of the neighbourhood not previously known. Thinking through what was needed and desired in these spaces, the group then envisioned and made their own artistic interventions in the form of drawings or sculptures, placed back out around the spaces and uploaded to Google Maps as new landmarks.

odd souls fall madly
the Debris riffs endlesslyinto the minor GodsSPRING/BREAK Art Show, Los AngelesFebruary 2022Co-curatorCo-curated with Elisabeth SmolarzWork by TOWERS (Dione Lee, Ethan Sim)︎

odd souls fall madly is a debut exhibition by artist collective TOWERS exploring the production of doctrine and power through cultural objects. Presented as a series of large-scale cyanotype prints, the work brings together human craft and machine- learning technology. Each print begins with hand-drawn or photographic images of cultural and historical artifacts that are sourced online and fed through multiple layers of processing and manipulation, resulting in unpredictable, infinitely reproducible patterns. Each one ends with the cyanotype printing process through which they are subject to the whims of the sun and natural weather conditions, ultimately blurring the boundaries between craft and technology, and authenticity and replication. Works remained on sale through SPRING/BREAK Art Fair until May 2022.

Regroundings brings together work by London-based artists Asuf Ishaq, Peter Spanjer, Onyeka Igwe, and Gal Leshem for a week-long film programme, in response to Mohamed Bourouissa’s exhibition HARa!!!!!!hAaaRAAAAA!!!!!hHAaA!!!. Departing from Bourouissa’s use of critical documentary, each artist deploys the medium of film to explore colonial legacies, ongoing racial and socio-cultural inequality, and diasporic identities. In each work, the lens functions as a tool to navigate the body and its relation to place, developing narrativ
e approaches to questioning collective histories within each artists’ locale.Regroundings takes the form of a conversation between the artists and curators, published periodically alongside each film. Through the act of direct-messaging, these conversations attempt to tackle a sense of unbridgeable distance in a time of viral isolation, delving deeply into the films’ respective explorations through informal exchange.Scroll through the full conversation here*.*the artists’ films are no longer available for viewing through the chat page.
