Featuring Puer Deorum & Jannat Husssain
A conversation between myself (Ankita), Jannat Hussain (Jannat), and Puer Deorum (Puer) – two British-Bangladeshi artists based in London. We met up on a chilly February afternoon in Woolwich. We got some bubble tea to get us going, and Puer hosted us in their studio. I had brought some clay for us to play with as we talked. Over the quiet thumping and scraping of our tools and fingers on the clay, we spoke about their work, challenges they’ve faced in their respective practices, the people in their lives who have protected and held them up, and their own journeys with community organising – particularly for the Bengali community here in London.

Puer Deorum is an interdisciplinary artist whose work balances negotiations between weight and ephemerality, touching upon the omnipresent scope of mortality. Drawing out from their cultural context, and referencing psycho/socio political geographies, they question homogenous ideas around the experience of time, see-sawing between monochronic (linear) and polychronic (fluid) methods. Weaving incantations of love and encapsulating embodied feelings, they tease temporalities through endurance and duration, amplifying (inter)personal experiences through dream sequences and interpretive actions. Selected sharings of their art include: Whitechapel Gallery (London), Serendipity Arts Festival (Goa), Les Urbaines (Lausanne), Hugo Boss (London), and Instrument Inventors (The Hague). Solo exhibitions: Filet Gallery (London), Quench Gallery (Margate). Selected awards: Set Studio Prize, and Arts Council DYCP Grant. They curated and produced ELO MELO, a multi-media festival in London across Whitechapel Gallery and Toynbee Hall, with Oitij-jo Collective. Notable talks and panel discussions include Tate Modern, and Glastonbury Festival.
Jannat Hussain is an interdisciplinary artist, curator, and creative facilitator with an MA and BA in Fine Art from Central Saint Martins. Her practice navigates the space between introspective realities and outward expression, where close observation of the self and interpersonal dynamics translates into highly emotive responses. Her work is experiential, grounded in the erudition of feeling, and involves extrapolating sentimental moments from her life that are worthy of rendering, mapping her emotional landscape. Jannat’s current focus lies in using the material and cultural attributes of sculpture and performance art to explore various forms of intimacy. She is currently the Creative Programme Coordinator at Arts Network, an arts and mental health charity. In addition, she holds a position on the Artist Council for a-n The Artist Information Company. Her work has been exhibited at Tate Britain, the V&A, The Albany Theatre, Cooke Latham Gallery, among others in both gallery and public settings.
